Is it normal for my boyfriend to be scared around our son?

Our son Jayden is only a week and a few days old, and my boyfriend doesn't seem so at ease with him yet. He was very excited when he found out he was having a kid(okay so a bit excited once i was 4 months along and he left denial) and he was okay with the idea of being a daddy until Jayden was actually born. Whenever he holds him he has a terrified look on his face as if he was going to drop him, and when i asked if he wanted to feed him he just quickly shook his head, and said he'd rather watch me. I thought he might just need to have alone time With him so on friday i asked if he would like to take him home with him, and he said he'd just stay the night with me, and he did. But when he stayed the night, he insisted that Jayden slept in his crib next to my bed instead of in it. He told me he was afraid to crush him. i mean im afraid tobe alone in my house, unless my mom is at the neighbors, and sometimes i can manage it. He is afraid if i leave the room. Is this normal behavior for a new, first time daddy?
