Canon T2i w/ cheap telephoto lens or Canon SX30 for birding photography?

I'd like to be able to take pictures from about 100 yards. I can't afford really nice telephoto lenses, but if I get cheap ones, will it degrade the quality so much that I might as well just get the sx30? It's 35x zoom is the equivalent of 840mm. Thanks!
