How hard is it for released felons to adjust to life on the outside and what can I do to help a friend?

He was in for 1 year of a 5 year sentence for drugs. He is clean and sober now, working but very reclusive and shy. I'd like to help be a stronger friend and supporter. I knew him before he went in, before he got mixed up and know him to have a heart of gold. He just went astray and is now back living... :-)
